Snorkeling and Swimming In our opinion, the Kona side of the Big Island offers the best snorkeling in the entire state of Hawaii. Our guesthouse overlooks Honaunau Bay and the very popular snorkeling area know as Two-Step. Just a few minutes away is Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook monument where you can kayak and snorkel in pristine ocean waters. Use our provided snorkel gear and see colorful fish and coral, green sea turtles, or on occasion, swim with wild dolphins! Our local beach, Ho’okena, is a great place to swim and relax.
Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park Also just minutes from our guesthouse, you can explore a true Big Island treasure by visiting Pu`uhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge) to learn interesting and historical information about life in old Hawaii.
Volcanoes National Park For beautiful views and scenic hiking trails most of our guests visit Volcanoes National Park. Currently, there are no active lava flows on the island, but the park is still breathtakingly magnificent and should not be missed.
Cultural Happenings and Events https://www.alternative-hawaii.com/ – a great source for local gallery openings, farm festivals, dance, concerts, and other eco-cultural happenings.
Other Activities Food festivals, theater performances, slack key concerts, and local rodeos.
Kona Coffee There are many local Kona coffee tours available. The coffee we serve at the Aloha Guest House is Hala Tree Organic Kona Coffee https://halatreecoffee.com/. They also give free tours and tastings at their coffee farm Monday - Friday.
Eco-Friendly:
The Aloha Guest House is very environmentally friendly. We are proud to recognize and honor the Hawaiian tradition of malama'aina. We strive for sustainability by augmenting our hot water and electrical supply using solar panels. Filtered rainwater is used for our entire household and gardening needs. We also limit our waste by recycling, reusing, and composting.
Besides operating the Aloha Guest House, Svetlana and I grow 100% organic fruits and vegetables on our small 5-acre farm. Our organic produce is part of the farm to table breakfast menu and even sold in local markets such as the South Kona Fruit Stand. We also raise free-range pasture-fed chickens for a daily supply of healthy organic farm-fresh eggs. Food used for our breakfasts is either fresh from our farm or purchased at local farmer’s markets and natural food stores. Hawaii imports between 60 and 90 percent of the food consumed on our islands. We are proud that our organic fruit farm plays a small role in helping make Hawaii more sustainable.
The Aloha Guest House has earned a gold rating in Tripadvisor’s Green Leader program.
